The Gabba Test of 2021 is part of the India cricket folklore and one name that springs to mind immediately after Rishabh Pant when we think of that game is Washington Sundar. Sundar who was picked for that tour out of obscurity only because he was an off-spinning all-rounder had no business playing that Test. Indian bowlers were already doing well and Ravichandran Ashwin was already out bowling Nathan Lyon in that series. But again fate would have a different plan for Sundar as Ashwin was ruled out of the final Test at the Gabba and the former got a surprise call to take his place.
Sundar who hadn’t played a single FC game since 2017 was an interesting selection. His selection was based on his ability to bat and bowl decent off-spin. Him being a like for like backup for Ashwin was the only reason for his selection. Everyone knew that Sundar was a great talent but there were question marks regarding his bowling prowess at least in the longer format. His FC record with the bat and ball wasn’t that impressive. In a way it was lucky for him that India bowled first in that Test which gave him a feel of Test cricket before he would bat couple of days later. Washington Sundar himself had a good bowling innings on his debut accounting for Steve Smith, Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon in his economical 31 overs spell. His spell was crucial as the Gabba wicket mostly known for helping pacers had nothing in it for him. His eventual spell of 3/89 was a crucial contribution in restricting Australian batting to just 369 in the first innings.
His major test though came a day later with the bat in hand. He walked into bat at the fall of the fifth wicket to join Rishabh Pant who once again was looking good at the middle. For a batter who hadn’t played too many FC games the striking feature of his debut was that how assured he looked against the experienced Aussie bowling line up. Soon after his arrival, Rishabh Pant departed leaving India still 183 runs behind. Sundar’s partnership with Shardul Thakur paved the way for a great comeback for the visitors and eventually winning the game on the 5th day.
Sundar in his innings of 62 showed great composure and technique in the middle. He wasn’t faced by the reputation of the Australian bowlers either. He did play an important cameo in the second innings as well aiding the chase. With great technique and temperament India seemed to have found a very good middle order bat. In the home series against England that followed Sundar continued to score runs and at the end of it was averaging 66.25 with the bat in Tests. His bowling was a work in progress but with the bat he had already showed that he belonged at that level. When everything was going right for him with his Test career an injury ruled him out of the England tour later that year and he was nowhere to be see in whites again after that.
The success in the Tests meant that Sundar started playing more FC cricket which in a way helped his comeback into the Indian team for the New Zealand series. Sundar has had an immediate impact on his return with a brilliant spell of spin bowling with figures of 7/59 on Day 1 which helped India restrict New Zealand to just 258 in their first innings. His bowling seems to have improved but again on an aiding Pune wicket everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. One thing that needs to be taken into account is that he surely has worked on his bowling as against England in 2021 on similar helpful wickets he was nowhere as good as yesterday. This bodes well for India as Sundar is an accomplished batter and if his bowling can continue to improve he can be the replacement India have been waiting for when the legendary Ravi Ashwin eventually calls it a day.
This has been a great comeback for the southpaw from Tamil Nadu but again he himself would know that he has a long way to go still. For India’s sake though we hope he continues to improve and perform as we all know how fantastic his temperament is. India would surely benefit having a player like him along with Rishabh Pant in the Test middle order. Congratulations once again to Washington Sundar on an incredible comeback and we hope this is just a start to an incredible Test career.

The team for the upcoming Australian series was announced earlier today and there were few surprises in the squad. This team was only for the first two games of the series. The biggest surprise was the inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja in the squad. After his performances in the World T20 I thought that it will take a long time for him to make a comeback but apparently I was wrong. The selectors named him in the 15 for the first two games based on his performance in the Irani trophy.
Sehwag and Yuvi have made it back to the team after missing out due to injuries in the champions Trophy as expected. Munaf also receives a call back after his exploits in the Irani trophy and the challenger Trophy where he was the highest wicket taker. Sudeep Tyagi gets a call which I thought was always on the cards as he has been consistently performing well in the domestic arena. His performance in the challenger Trophy and “Emerging players” trophy has catapulted him to the National squad fairly early.
The rest of the team is on the expected lines as Kohli and Mishra have been retained in the squad after some good showings in the CT. Ashish Nehra will be leading the pace bowling department and Bajji will be taking care of the spin. The other big surprise in the squad is the inclusion of Ishant Sharma, in spite of his mediocre performances in ODI cricket for the past year or so. His performances in the challenger trophy were also not up to the mark as he was constantly out bowled by Tyagi and Munaf. This shows the confidence the management has on the youngster and I hope he doesn’t disappoint.
Rahul Dravid unfortunately does not enjoy such confidence from the selectors who have dropped him from the squad. Rahul made a comeback to the side after 2 years since the selectors thought that the youngsters were suspect against the bouncing ball in SA but has been discarded for the home series against the Australians. I am actually really disappointed with the way the great man has been treated as he has done whatever was asked of him throughout his career. He has batted in all positions, kept wickets to maintain the balance in the squad without complaining but still continues to be treated badly by the selectors.
Yusuf Pathan has been shown the door but this was expected after his performances in SL and CT. Irfan Pathan could not be considered as he is currently injured. Ravichandran Aswin has not been considered for the all rounders spot and none of the good performers from the challenger’s trophy have got a look in.
All in all the team looks solid with the inclusion of Yuvi and Sehwag. It will be interesting to see where Sachin bats, since Sehwag is back in the squad now. I am assuming that Ghambir will drop down the order to accommodate Sehwag at the top with Sachin. The bowling selection will also be interesting as India don’t have a good all rounder in the team. I am not sure if they would want to go with two spinners or 3 pacers as most of the wickets for this series will be batsmen friendly. When looking at the squad selected for the series, Nehra and Bajji seem to be the only sure starters in the lineup.
All in all even though there have been few surprises, the squad looks solid and has capabilities to put it past the Aussies. The series begins in 10 days time and I hope that we put up a good show. I am going for a 4-3 win for the home team. Go India!!
Squad from the first two ODI’s against the Aussies:
Squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Sudeep Tyagi, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma.

The Australians face an uphill task of keeping this series alive as the Indians have an impressive record at the Ferozshah Kotla ground. India havent lost a test match in 21 years at this ground. There has been some reports in the media that few former cricketers feel that Mishra needs to be played in the place of VVS Laxman in the team. This is a completely ridiculous call from the former players as VVS Laxman is a batsmen with a proven record against the Aussies.
The Indian coach has made it clear that Kumble will play in Delhi if he is fit. That puts an end to all speculations involving the team selection for the next test. India is all set to retain the same squad which won in Mohali with just Kumble replacing Mishra being the only change. Anil Kumble will be captaining the Indian side in Delhi where the Indians would be hoping to seal the series.

Amit Mishra had a great debut game but playing five bowlers has seldom worked in India. I guess India would be better of with four bowlers as the fifth bowler is always underbowled in a test match. well the Selections apart this series is heating up with the comments from Gilchrist against Sachin and with the pressure put by the Australian media on its players. The Australian team would quickly want to erase the embarassing defeat they faced in Mohali from their memories and would like to level the series in Delhi.
All in all we can expect another great game of cricket and hopefully the Indians can wrap up the series with another clinical performance.

The Indian selectors get together this wednesday to pick the team for the upcoming test series against the Aussies. Everyone is keen to find out if Ganguly who was left out of the ROI team in the Irani trophy would be considered for the test series or not. The team selection itself proves to be quite interesting if Ganguly is left out of the team which will be the most likely scenario.
The top four for the first test at least pick themselves. Sehwag and Ghambir are most certain to open the innings followed by Dravid at number 3 and Sachin at 4. Laxman might bat at number 5 but there is one spot which will be vacant in the Indian middle order. It will be interesting to see who will replace Ganguly at that spot. There are quite a few contenders fighting for that one spot in the Indian middle order. The two most likely to occupy that spot would be either Badrinath or Rohit Sharma but there are few others with an outside chance. Mohammed kaif with a good knock in Irani trophy could have got himself in contention but his twin failures could work against him. Then there is Virat Kohli who had great Srilankan tour performing with great consistancy in the one day series.
A year ago if some one had asked me as to who would be the likely candidate to replace Sourav in the test team, I would have no hesitation to say Yuvraj’s name. But in the current scenario he has as much chance as the guy we are talking he can replace to make the team. It seems though that either Badrinath or Rohit Sharma might make the test team this time. So I guess the top 6 might look something like this,
1. Sehwag
2. Ghambir
3. Dravid
4. Sachin
5. Badrinath or Rohit Sharma
6. Laxman
The top 6 will be followed by Mahindra Singh Dhoni who will be proceeded by the bowlers. The first test might see Kumble and Harbajan bowling in tandem with Ishant and Zaheer taking the new ball. Munaf might be in the 15 but may not play at least in the first test.
All in all its going to be an interesting selection with a possibility of Sourav still making the team.
